On “Continental” Philosophy

Some in the legal academy try to locate their work in what they call "the Continental tradition" as a way mainly of insulating themselves from philosophical scrutiny.  Within academic philosophy, there are PhD philosophers who often do the same.  That there is no Continental tradition in philosophy, and that those who talk as though there is one are usually engaged in a political effort to capture the field for a particular, and rather narrow, philosophical program are facts that may be relevant to some legal scholars.
