Stanley, who decamped from Yale to Toronto after just a few months of Trump’s reign of lawlessness, advises Canadians not to send their children to U.S. universities. An excerpt:
I have heard Canadians hope their children might attend university in the U.S., apparently unaware that they would be plunged into an unfree society and subject to arbitrary detention….
ICE is now an internal security force, seemingly beholden to Trump alone. The agency, which received a colossal $75 billion in new funding last year, continues to terrorize U.S. civilians: on Wednesday in Minneapolis, for example, an ICE agent shot and killed a 37-year-old mother…
Non-citizens in America now have few rights, and certainly no right to free speech. To enter the country, they must submit to an “online presence review,” presumably to ensure they have not criticized the U.S. or its ally Israel on social media. Work visas and student visas can be revoked at any time….
All Canadians must now recognize that their once-reliable ally poses a genuine existential threat to the free world. So far, America has waged only economic warfare against Canada, but the threat of annexation is also still clearly on the table. It is not difficult to imagine Trump or some future U.S. autocrat transforming this trade war into a military one….
I am shocked by Canadians who spend their Canadian-earned fortunes supporting American universities when tuition in Canada is vastly cheaper and our schools are among the best in the world. We are extraordinarily privileged to live in this country, yet I have spoken to Canadians who say they would rather live in the U.S. — even now.
Alas, I think this advice is correct. Although the U.S. is not, yet anyway, a fascist state (contrary to Jason’s rhetoric), the Trump administration is lawless, authoritarian, and especially dangerous for those here on visas. Unless the 2026 elections lead to a repudiation of the Republican Party, I would not recommend foreigners risk studying here.
