UPDATED July 8, 2004, with new information; thanks to all for feedback. Various revisions below. I’m sure reasonable and similarly informed readers would likely differ by +1 or -1 on the final scores, below.
============
The market for the “top” legal scholars is intense, and there is much coming and going. We looked at the top 18 law schools, in terms of faculty quality, to see how they fared between the 2000-01 academic year and the 2004-05 academic year to see who came out ahead and who lost ground. Quality is more important than quantity: did schools, e.g., lose their very best people; did schools add faculty who are at the very top of their roster in terms of quality, or did they merely add “filler”? The judgments are necessarily subjective, but well-informed. The detailed information appears below for those who want to assess the changes for themselves.
In summary form, the schools most improved among the top 18 over the last five years are:
Columbia University
University of California, Los Angeles
University of Texas, Austin
Vanderbilt University
Yale University
The schools who lost the most ground are:
Cornell University
Northwestern University
University of Chicago
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Schools that gained some ground during this five-year period are: Duke University; Harvard University; University of Pennsylvania.
Schools that lost some ground during this five-year period are: University of California, Berkeley.
Schools that “broke even” (as it were) in terms of gains and losses are: Georgetown University; New York University; Stanford University; University of Southern California; University of Virginia.
The details appear below:
Law Faculty Gains and Losses, 2000-01 to 2004-05,
+3: Dramatically improved
+2: Noticeably improved
+1: Slightly improved
0: no real change
