Hathaway from Michigan to Melbourne

James Hathaway, a leading authority on refugee law at the University of Michigan Law School, will take up the post of Dean of the law faculty at the University of Melbourne in January 2008.  This is the first time I can recall a member of a leading American law faculty moving to a Deanship in Australia or any other commonwealth territory.  Can readers think of other examples?

    If Canada counts as a commonwealth territory (I think it’s one of the lands whose citizens are subjects of the queen of England), and Houston counts as leading, then there’s Mary Anne Bobinski, dean of UBC’s law school.

    Howard Hunter of Emory is now president of Singapore Management University. It’s not a law deanship, but I imagine a presidency will do for this purpose.

    Even if a presidency qualifies, I would exclude Woody Hunter’s move to Singapore, on the “law faculty” as well as the “commonwealth” criterion. Woody had been doing administration fulltime at Emory since 1989 (first deaning and then serving for a few years as interim provost) before he took the presidency of Singapore Management. Technically he was a member of the Emory faculty all along, but not writing and teaching a la Hathaway at Michigan or Bobinski at Houston. Unless more comments-to-come refute it, Brian’s point about a VERY small club stands.

    Since he hired me into law teaching, I will recuse myself on the Hunter question, beyond noting that his initial appointee to the deanship at Singapore Management University’s new law school was David Smith, long-time Vice-Dean at Harvard.
    [Note: Smith stepped down immediately after taking up the deanship (though he remains on the faculty, it seems), and was replaced by Michael Furmston, long-time faculty member, and dean of the faculty of law, at Oxford and Bristol.]
