Other Resources for Applying to Graduate School

A student writes:

I  am starting the process of applying to Philosophy PhD programs for Fall of ’09.  I have been reading your blog & the PGR for a while now.  I was hoping you could put something on your blog about where prospective applicants can go to find resources.  Maybe there is a good blog or 2 out there about this topic, or a moderated forum?  I have tons of questions for people in the know and having trouble accessing those people.  I’m not looking for a personal reply, but if you could post some links on your blog, that would be helpful.

Post suggestions in the comments, and post only once; they may take awhile to appear.

Lots of topics discussed here, but Grad Admissions is one of the main ones. Hunt around.

  2. When I was applying to graduate school, I blogged pretty heavily about any information I could find. I don't take myself to be a person in the know, but you might find some of the info useful. You can find it at http://www.philblogs.com/normalscience. Once there, click on the graduate school posts and scroll to the bottom.

  3. I am in the process (almost through, actually) of applying to graduate programs. As I am interested in aesthetics, one resource that I have found beneficial is "A Guide to Graduate Aesthetics in North America" on the American Society for Aesthetics website. I don't know if there are similar guides for other fields in philosophy, but this guide was a good supplement to the rankings on the PGR.

  4. My Brooks Blog ( http://the-brooks-blog.blogspot.com/ ) regularly covers this topic, focussing particularly on the UK.

  5. I'm currently blogging about my application process. I guess most of it won't be entirely helpful until I know where and where not I've gotten into – you don't want to imitate a loser.

But my blogging on the GRE is extremely helpful. So if you need to take it or, for that matter, retake it, check out the relevant portions on the GRE.

I've also found John's blog very helpful in my process. So thanks, John.

  6. Eric Schwitzgebel (UCR) has a series of blog posts that applicants will find very useful:

Elijah Millgram provides some sound advice on writing samples and gives a nice sample sample too:

Finally, students considering whether graduate work will be good for them should make use of this collection of links, esp. those in the last section:

  7. The philosophy department at Glasgow University used to have what I remember as a very useful guide to applying to graduate programs in the States. I can't find the page any more – if anyone knows how to gain access to it, I think it deserves to be widely shared. I remember finding the advice offered as useful and reasonably comprehensive – I only wish I'd found it before going through the process myself.

  8. This thread is very, very informative – the best I have come across when it comes to philosophy applications:
