PGR Draft Faculty Lists for fall 2011 Surveys

I'm now beginning the process of gearing up for a new set of PGR surveys in fall 2011.  To that end, the draft faculty lists are here:   Download PGR Faculty Lists 2011-12.

The benchmark for the faculty list is fall 2012, so, e.g., faculty who will be retired by then are not on the list, or faculty who have already committed to be elsewhere by then, are listed with the department they will be with 2012 (assuming it is part of the survey).

Please post corrections to the list in the comments, unless it pertains to a sensitive matter, in which case e-mail me.

All faculties from the 2009 PGR are included if they had a score of 2.1 or higher in those surveys.  The only exceptions are faculties with a score lower than 2.1 that have had significant changes since then that might raise the score.  In addition, of course, some faculties not surveyed in recent years have been added.   Faculties not included this year will continue to be ranked in the specialty rankings based on the 2009 results, with adjustments, where appropriate, based on input from the Advisory Board.

Because the most frequent complaint of PGR evaluators concerns the large number of faculties they are asked to evaluate, it is necessary to keep the total number of faculties included at a reasonable number, which is why we can not survey all faculties every time.

Only faculty at the department in question should post corrections.  Signed comments only.

    To 'main faculty', add: Paul Gooch (President, Victoria University), Karolina Huebner, Ulrich Schloesser, Andrew Sepielli;

    Colin Howson may be retiring by 2012–13 (I will follow up on this);

  11. … Anjan Chakravartty is Director of the Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology

  12. Hey all. Here are some corrections for Colorado:

    1. David Boonin is now the Associate Dean of A&S.
    2. Graham Oddie is no longer the Associate Dean.
    3. Michael Zimmerman is no longer the Direct of the Center for Humanities and Arts.
    4. Cognate faculty addition: Steve Vanderheiden is trained as a philosopher and works in environmental ethics through the political science department. He’s also a fellow at ANU’s CAPPE. (http://spot.colorado.edu/~vanders/)
    5. Another cognate faculty correction: You have “Michael Ferguson,” but this should be “Michaele Ferguson.” She’s a woman. (http://polsci.colorado.edu/component/option,com_qcontacts/catid,13/id,13/view,contact/)

    Hope this helps!

  15. Florida State University:

Nathanael Stein has been hired (to begin Fall 2011).

    Russell Dancy has retired.

Victoria Costa and Joshua Gert are no longer in the department.

  16. Russ Shafer-Landau

Wisconsin faculty: Keith Yandell has recently retired and Ivan Soll will retire at the end of this academic term.

  17. Auckland, New Zealand. Tim Mulgan will return to the Department (from St Andrews) in June 2012.

Marin Wilkinson (Cognate faculty and philosophers in other units) should be 'Martin'. Monique Jonas joined the School of Population Health in 2010, and should be in this list of cognate faculty.

  18. CAMBRIDGE Two names should be deleted from the Cognate Faculty list for Cambridge: Melissa Lane has left Cambridge for Princeton, and Onora O'Neill has retired. (I think that David Runciman can fairly be added to the Cognate Faculty list, though I'm not certain whether he supervises Philosophy doctoral students.)

  19. University of British Columbia.

To faculty, add: Scott Anderson, Matt Bedke, Michael Griffin, Chris Mole

To part-time faculty, add: Adam Morton, John Woods

To cognate faculty, add: Mike Burgess, David Silver

From cognate faculty, remove: Gordon Christie, Michael McDonald, John Woods

Correction for cognate faculty: Replace 'Ted Slingerland' with 'Edward Slingerland'

  20. At USC, two minor spelling points – I believe James Van Cleve has capital letters on all three names (unlike, for instance, Peter van Inwagen), and under cognate faculty, Elena Guerzoni has only one "i" in her last name. (I assume neither would actually cause any confusion, but especially for cognate faculty I want to make sure people are making evaluations based on the correct person, rather than a potential person in a completely unrelated field with a similarly-spelled name!)

  21. Pittsburgh: J. E. McGuire has retired, and Nuel Belnap is retiring at the end of the current academic year.

  22. Georgetown: Add Jason Brennan, cognate faculty (primary appt in business)

Michael Martin and Veronique Munoz-Darde, who are at UCL in the 2nd and 3rd terms, are each on 75% appointments and have been carrying over 75% of a fulltime teaching load. We've moved over to a new MPhil Stud degree for reseach students, with more graduate seminars in the third term and one-on-one graduate supervision concentrated in that term.

    Donald Gillies is retired.
Hasok Chang has moved to Cambridge HPS.
    Robert Sharples is deceased.
    Neil Smith is retired.
    Dierdre Wilson is retired.

  28. PS to my above UCL post:

  31. Stirling (part of the St Andrews/Stirling Programme):

Antony Duff and Alan Millar both retired from full time positions last year. Both are currently on part-time contracts, but neither I assume will take on new PhD students. (Duff has been removed, but Millar is still on the list.)

Their replacements are Ben Saunders (on the list) and Colin Johnston and Steinvor Arnadottir – the latter two on a job share, though Johnston is currently full time while Arnadottir is on a Leverhulme fellowship.

  32. Add to Michigan Cognate Faculty & Philosophers in Other Units:
