  • Professorial rank and responsibilities in a philosophy department

Curious set of questions here.  I've never heard of a department in which the assistant professors are supposed to assist the full professors!

Hart, along with Hans Kelsen, was one of the two great figures in legal philosophy of the past century.  This wide-ranging interview a few years before his death covers the personal, professional, and intellectual.  The quality of the audio is uneven, and a transcript is forthcoming.  OUP has released the audio to mark the publication…

  • NYU Arts & Sciences Faculty Threatening “No Confidence” Vote in NYU President Sexton

Story here.  There is a curious quote from Martin Lipton, head of the NYU Board of Trustees (and a longtime backer of Sexton since he was Dean of the law school) lauding him as a recognized "international leader" in higher education.  That's a bit of hyperbole worthy of Sexton!  In my travels overseas, I've never…

  • Paul Krugman re-discovers Marx

What took him so long?  Krugman has been such a relief to those of us in the United States, because the public culture is so bereft of critical perspective, but the fact remains that he's an apologist for the capitalist system, just not as bonkers as some of the others.  I quote from his recent…
