A prolific contributor to philosophy of language and epistemology in the analytic tradition, he was also, in 1963, one of the three founding faculty of the UC San Diego Department of Philosophy. (He was responsible for later hiring Herbert Marcuse, among others.) The Wikipedia entry gives some indication of the range of his philosophical writings.
