The book was Gellner's scathing attack on ordinary language philosophy, Words and Things (1959), which included criticism of Ryle. Bertrand Russell, who had written a preface for the book, wrote to The Times protesting Ryle's decision, which sparked many letters in reply, including from Ryle. They are all collected here.
