Agreed with the other commentator. It is extremely unlikely that Pangram’s success is due to its cheating by reading metadata.

A federal judge in Virginia and a U.S. Senator vs. the border police at Dulles Airport in Washington, DC

A striking account of the standoff at the airport.   This may be defiance of a court order and it also may be brute incompetence.  Either way, the federal judge will not be happy, so this will pay watching.  And the fact that a U.S. Senator intervened is remarkable.

  1. There is a petition from academics, already very long and with many distinguished contributors, opposing the ban here: https://notoimmigrationban.com/
    I hope all will join.

BL COMMENT: Thanks, there is already a link to the petition in an earlier post on the site as well, along with some additional info.

  2. CBP still seems to be denying counsel access to detainees. http://dcist.com/2017/01/customs_and_border_protection_still.php

According to Damon Silvers, Special Counsel at the AFLCIO, to his best knowledge no one detained at Dulles has seen a lawyer today. CBP seems to be taking the view that those in their custody are not 'detained' and international arrivals are not 'in the United States.' https://twitter.com/DamonSilvers

So, not all creative lawyering is in the service of justice but if there was ever a time to give to the ACLU, unions and other legal aid clinics, now might be it.

  4. Janet Napolitano, the President of the University of California (and former governor of Arizona and former Secretary of Homeland Security) and the Chancellors of the campuses of the University of California released this statement today:

We are deeply concerned by the recent executive order that restricts the ability of our students, faculty, staff, and other members of the UC community from certain countries from being able to enter or return to the United States.

While maintaining the security of the nation's visa system is critical, this executive order is contrary to the values we hold dear as leaders of the University of California. The UC community, like universities across the country, has long been deeply enriched by students, faculty, and scholars from around the world, including the affected countries, coming to study, teach, and research. It is critical that the United States continues to welcome the best students, scholars, scientists, and engineers of all backgrounds and nationalities.

We are committed to supporting all members of the UC community who are impacted by this executive action.
