In Memoriam: Jerry Fodor (1935-2017)

MOVING TO FRONT FROM NOVEMBER 29, WITH MANY UPDATES AND NEW LINKS

Dean Zimmerman at Rutgers has let me know of the passing of Professor Fodor, one of the great figures of Anglophone philosophy of the last half century.  He was emeritus at Rutgers University, a department he helped catapult into the top ranks internationally when he moved there in the late 1980s, and taught previously at the City University of New York Graduate Center and for some twenty years at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology.  I will add links to the memorial notices that will no doubt soon appear.

ADDENDUM:  Here's an entertaining exchange I had with him back in 2004 about "analytic" philosophy.

ANOTHER:  Recall this poll from early 2016 about the most influential philosophers of mind since World War II.

MORE:  A brief notice from the London Review of Books, to which Fodor contributed many reviews over the years.

IN GERMAN:   From the Frankfurter Allgemeine–they were quick!

UPDATE:   The NYT obituary.

ANOTHER:  The Rutgers memorial.

VARIOUS PHILOSOPHERS ON FODOR:  Felipe de Brigard (Duke), Richard Heck (Brown), Georges Rey (Maryland).

AND A LINGUIST:  Geoffrey Pullum (Edinburgh).  (Thanks to Peter Klein for the pointer.)
