Diversity blather watch: APA edition

A well-known senior philosopher elsewhere shared with me the latest fund-raising pitch from the APA, prefacing it with this:  "I renewed my membership this year, but I think it will be the last. Never would I think of making a contribution."

Here's the latest from the APA, below the fold (and here's an indication of issues that a lot of philosophers actually think are more important):

Dear [name omitted],

Diversity continues to be a critical issue in our discipline. Women, people of color, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities continue to be underrepresented, but the American Philosophical Association is working to change that. Today I’m writing to ask you to help us in our efforts to make the profession more supportive of all philosophers.

We have established several targeted funds that enable us to provide support for philosophers from underrepresented groups and overseas philosophers, including the Fund for Diversity and Inclusiveness, the Travel Assistance Fund for Philosophers of Color, the Fund for Assistance to Overseas Philosophers, and the Fund for the Essay Prize in Latin American Thought. Please consider donating to one or more of our diversity funds.

"As numerous countries face increasing challenges around inclusion and diversity, we philosophers need to engage these challenges both inside our discipline and in the wider world.

I give to the APA to facilitate its efforts to help philosophy meet the challenges of the 21st century."

– Elizabeth Anderson, University of Michigan–Ann Arbor,

chair of the APA Task Force on Diversity and Inclusion

The APA is able to continue its mission to support philosophers from underrepresented groups because of your support and generosity. Make a tax-deductible contribution today.

With gratitude,

Executive Director
