A sociologist and social theorist at the University of Wisconsin at Madison for many years, he has also been an important contributor to "analytical Marxism," and makes available much excellent material on his webpage.  But what prompts this particular post is that, as I've learned from many friends and colleagues, he is dying of leukemia, and writing about it here.  It is quite remarkable.
