Humanities, including philosophy, in community colleges

Robert Townsend, Director of the Washington Office of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, kindly wrote to share news of a new study from the AAAS:

[W]e have just released a new report on the humanities in community colleges (at http://bit.ly/HESCC2019), with a number of interesting findings about philosophy study in the sector, including:

  • Between 255- and 275-thousand community college students took a philosophy course in the fall of 2015.
  • Approximately 5,000 faculty taught courses in philosophy.
  • Approximately 90% of community colleges offered a course in philosophy.
  • Students taking philosophy courses comprised about 4% of total enrollments for credit at community colleges.
  • Among students enrolled in philosophy courses at community colleges, 4%–7% were dually enrolled high school students.
