Pretty remarkable, given the size of the country and the proximity (and ties) to China. Nothing like competent political leadership during a catastrophe.
My wife was in Vietnam for a couple of weeks in late January-early February. Tourist-serving businesses had up signs saying they were not open to Chinese customers.
Vietnam has virtually no men over the age of 75 because the US army killed most of them. And not very many women of that age. People over 75 make almost 3/4 of the deaths, in, for example, NYC, and well over half of those are men. Vietnam also probably has much lower rates of comorbidities like diabetes among its people under 75 than the US or western european countries. It's hard to imagine this is not playing a role in their low death rate.

That's interesting demographic data, although it shows that Vietnam has several hundred thousand men and women in the age ranges most at risk from COVID-19. So yes demographics is playing a role, but a large role was obviously played by competent and proactive publish health measures.
