Faculty governance crisis at the College of Staten Island (part of the CUNY system)…

…where the President of the College, having received a vote of "no confidence" from the faculty, is now attempting a naked power grab.  The New York chapter of the AAUP has also weighed in.  Comments are open for those with more information, links to news stories, etc.

  1. As a faculty member at the College of Staten Island, I can say that this is a serious threat to any sort of faculty governance. In addition, staff and students are systematically having their voices silenced. Hand-picked appointees would replace elected representatives from these groups. Please go to http://www.csiunited.com for more information.

  2. Update (Oct 4th): The results of the required referendum are in: 87.3% of the instructional staff at the College of Staten Island voted against President Fritz's plan. The college's bylaws dictate that the proposal can therefore not be presented to CUNY's Board of Trustees for their consideration. However, the president's statement to the college today included no acknowledgement of this, and no suggestion that he will engage the institution's Bylaws Committee in the normal, proper and collegial manner. Faculty, staff and students at CSI are committed to enforcing our bylaws, our governance structure, and we condemn any attempt by President William J. Fritz to submit his plan to CUNY's Board of Trustees.
