Great moments in obscure rock ‘n’ roll covers: Paul Gilbert, “Great White Buffalo,” 2016

Paul Gilbert is probably best-known as the guitarist for the 1990s hard rock band Mr. Big, but this cover comes from a more recent solo album.  His version of the old Ted Nugent/Amboy Dukes song is really quite good, I think (unlike Nugent, one can understand the lyrics in Gilbert's rendering–although I usually prefer not to understand rock lyrics, given the low intellectual level of the genre, to put it politely):

    I know of Nugent, Amboy Dukes, and even the band Mr. Big, but the name Paul Gilbert is new to me. Looks like he recently released a tribute to Ronnie James Dio sans vocals:

    Dio is an occasional guilty pleasure for me, but when it comes to metal singers I favor Gillan and Osbourne, plus more recent vocalists who have one way or another advanced the genre: Blind Marky Felchtone (of Zeke) and Matt Pike (High on Fire), among others. Judging from the music and the liner notes penned by Gilbert himself, the admiration of Dio and his colleagues is genuine. This new record sounds like a good one.

    I am a big Paul Gilbert fan. I don't know what my favorite performance or composition is, but this cover of "Godzilla" is among the most fun:

    Well, I was certainly not expecting to find a PG post here! I studied with him back in his prodigy days, when he was an 18-year-old teacher at Musicians Institute in Hollywood. Shredders are not know for having much humor in their music or their personalities, but he has both. Fearsome player and wonderful guy!
