A longtime faculty member (in political science) at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Professor Avineri was best-known among philosophers for his work on Hegel and on Marx. The Haaretz obituary testifies to his importance as a public figure and intellectual in Israel. A couple of months ago on this blog, I commended Avineri's THE MAKING OF MODERN ZIONISM. I also admire his books on Marx and Hegel (even though I'm not enamored of either Marx or Hegel). I met Avineri only once, almost thirty years ago, and I found him to be a genial and sharply intelligent interlocutor. His death is a great blow for the community of philosophically adept historians of philosophy.
