“Philosophy Admissions Spreadheet” for 24-25

Linds Whittaker, a graduate student at the University of Washington, shares this year's spreadsheet.  He writes:"This year the TOEFL/English Language requirements have been added along with writing sample requirements when possible. It sounds like several universities may not be accepting applicants this year (Columbia, Wash University in St. Louis, maybe Bowling Green) and I will be adding additional information about any admissions pauses I find over the next few weeks."

Suspended admissions were more common during the pandemic; I wonder whether anyone knows why Columbia (usually a top 10-15 program) and Wash U/St. Louis (usually a top 25-30 program) are suspending admissions this year?

  1. I don't know about Wash U or Columbia, but I have been told that Bowling Green has decided to close down their graduate programs.

  2. Wash U is not taking applications this year. We will resume next year. We had a very large yield for last years cohort, larger than historical trends would have predicted. Thus, in order to preserve the six years of funding we offer to all admitted students, we needed to pause admissions for one year.

  3. Columbia had a large yield for last year's cohort as well (I believe 9 out of 10 accepted the offer, whereas their common number of people per cohort is around 5).

  4. The Columbia philosophy department web page has a banner saying the admissions to the Ph.D. program are suspended for this year (after having a bumper crop last year) but will start again next.
And also that admissions to the MA program (I suppose this includes philosophy/law joint students), and to specialized MA in philosophy and physics, are still open this year.
