In Memoriam: George Bealer (1944-2025)

Professor Bealer was well-known for his contributions to metaphysics and cognate areas.  He taught at Reed College, the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Texas at Austin, and, from 2005 until his retirement, at Yale University.  The Yale statement in honor of his retirement in 2014 gives a nice sense of his distinctive contributions to philosophy.  Comments are open for remembrances from those who knew Professor Bealer or for those who wish to comment on the significance of his work.

  1. His very long paper 'The Limits of Scientific Essentialism' (Philosophical Perspectives 1, 1987) deserves to be more widely known.
It lays down a challenge that has yet to be met by wannabe 'naturalists'. Also, there is less commitment to 'conceptual analysis', which comes to the fore later in his work, and in my view the paper is stronger for that.
