Terry Reid was the British blues rock singer who was Jimmy Page's first choice as lead singer for the band he was forming that became Led Zeppelin. Reid turned Page down, and recommended Robert Plant, and the "rest is history" as they say. Reid recorded many albums and singles, but never achieved significant success. But you can hear what Page and others admired about his voice in this number from his debut album:
The obvious yet essential nod goes to Cheap Trick for their cover of "Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace" on their first album, which is rivaled only by the third LP, Heaven Tonight. While I'm not a huge fan of the live album from Japan, which I nevertheless acquired upon release before the domestic version appeared, here's Reid enjoying the arena rock he deserves.
I saw CT a number of times in the early days, both pre- and post-Budokan, including at LA's Whisky. Unlike almost any other band, they managed to improve as the venue expanded. To my ear, that's quite a feat.
