I was a very close friend of Steve’s, whom I think I met in 1966, when we were both at Corpus Christi Oxford. Indeed, he was my first close intellectual friend. I admired and enjoyed his intelligence, decency, wit and charm. I am so very sorry to learn of his death.

When I was a lecturer at UCLA and still finishing my dissertation at Ohio State, I had the opportunity to participate in a regular working group that brought together philosophy and law faculty. In the sessions where I presented, Steve was consistently generous and perceptive, offering comments that were both incisive and deeply helpful. I am certain that my earliest publications were substantially improved by his engagement.
Steve was equally generous outside the formal setting of the group. I remember with particular fondness a summer meeting at his house, where we drank tea and talked through papers we were both working on. His care for people and ideas left a lasting mark on my work and on me.
