In Memoriam: William McBride (1938-2026)

Profesor McBride, who was emeritus at Purdue University, was especially well-known for his work on Sartre, as well as on Marxist theory and on topics in social and political philosophy as well. There is an obituary here. Comments are open for remembrances from those who knew Professor McBride or for those who would like to comment on the significance of his work.

  1. Bill and I had adjacent offices for my 15 years at Purdue. My fondest memory has little to do with philosophy, but much to do with his character. Occasionally I would bring my dog, Wulfie, up to the Department. Bill’s door was open, and Wulfie would run into Bill’s office. Far from being annoyed, Bill would ask Wulfie how he (Wulfie) was doing. A couple of cheery barks and a wagging tail provided an unmistakable answer.
