Professor Charles, who was emeritus at Yale (where he taught from 2014 to 2023), was a leading scholar of ancient philosophy, especially Aristotle. Prior to Yale, he taught at Oxford from 1979 until his move to Yale. Most recently, he was visiting professor of philosophy at Stanford.
