“Payment Works” is awful

I’ve had to use it three times now for reimbursements from otherwise serious universities; I was horrified to discover UChicago makes people use it as well. The people who designed this should be in jail for reckless waste of tens of thousands of hours of academic time (this is hyperbole, for those keeping track–in fact, their imcompetence is not a crime). It is confusing, with a difficult to use interface, and information requirements that are often irrelevant for academics seeking reimbursements.

Question for readers: are there alternatives that can be recommended? I’m going to lobby at least my university to use a different provider. Suggestions welcome!

  1. An alternative system, called “Workday”, was adopted by the University of Wisconsin System last year, when it’s use became obligatory for all the UW campuses. It’s dreadful. An article by a Madison journalist, available at https://tonemadison.com/articles/workday-and-the-excesses-of-higher-ed-efficiency-consultants/ , discusses the particulars at UW-Madison, and also the underlying issues of consultant-driven management.

    1. I’m not an academic, but I will confirm that Workday has filled this niche in lots of public sector agencies and is, indeed, terrible. As in, terrible enough for unions to propose contract language demanding annual trainings and time carve-outs for using it.
