Political philosopher David Estlund at Brown University has (alas!) turned down the senior offer from the University of Texas at Austin. Meanwhile, Brown has extended an offer to political philosopher Charles Larmore at the University of Chicago.
The retention of Estlund caps a rather remarkable couple of years for the small Brown Department, which has retained numerous faculty in the face of competitive offers elsewhere, many from stronger departments (Arpaly has turned down Michigan; Broackes has turned down Oxford; Dreier and Hill have turned down Arizona; Estlund has also turned down Virginia; and Reginster has turned down Cornell). The only losses recently have been James van Cleve to University of Southern California (this year) and Brian Weatherson to Cornell (last year).
