The Department of Philosophy at the University of California, Riverside–already one of the top choices for students interested in 19th- and 20th-century Continental philosophy–has voted out an offer to Maudemarie Clark at Colgate University, the most influential senior figure in the field of Nietzsche studies.  If she joins Pierre Keller, Georgia Warnke, and Mark Wrathall at Riverside, that program will be at least as strong a choice as Chicago’s for students interested in German philosophy of the 19th- and 20th- centuries.  (Riverside would have the advantage over Chicago of being deeper and broader in its other philosophical strengths [e.g., in philosophy of language, mind, and action], while Chicago would remain more appealing for those primarily interested in German Idealism or with strong cognate interests in ancient philosophy.)  Students applying to graduate school this year will want to keep an eye on what develops.
