Creating a List of Philosophers Visiting from Abroad

MOVING TO FRONT FROM AUGUST 27

Yujin Nagasawa, a philosopher at the University of Birmingham, writes:

I wonder if you might be interested in discussing on your blog the possibility of making a list of philosophers visiting foreign countries. The website of the British Philosophical Association used to have a list of philosophers visiting UK each year but it would be nice to have such a list for other countries as well. It would benefit organisers of departmental seminars and conferences because they can invite international speakers with minimum cost. It would also benefit speakers because it allows them to give as many talks as possible while they are overseas.

This does seem a very useful idea.  I will open comments here for philosophers, or host departments, to post information about philosophers from other countries visiting during 2009-10.  But if someone wants to set up a website for this purpose, send me a link, and I will post it.    Signed comments only will be approved, to help insure the accuracy of this list.

The Review of Metaphysics runs a list (alas, apparently not on-line) of such visiting scholars in their September volume. Their website states:

"The September issue of the Review provides special information not readily available elsewhere. Notices of Visiting Professors from Abroad and of North American Professors Abroad provide a list of potential speakers for campuses and conventions."

(located here: http://www.reviewofmetaphysics.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2&Itemid=3, under "annual notices")

  2. For what it's worth, I will be visiting in London from 1 September, 2009- 1 December, 2009 as a Visiting Professorial Fellow at the Institute of Philosophy, School of Advanced Study, University of London.

  3. Richard Eldridge

Likewise for what it's worth, I will be a Visiting Fellow at
the Freiburg Research Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS)
at the University of Freiburg, Germany, from 15 October 2009
    to 1 August 2010.

  4. Thanks to those who have posted so far. Let's not be shy, folks. It's nice to share the information, you never know who out there has been reading your work and will be delighted to know you're in the area.

I will be a Visiting Professor at the University of Paris X (Nanterre) for roughly the last two weeks of March 2010, teaching some jurisprudence seminars roughly every other day. I won't have a lot of spare time, but may have some.

  5. As someone who often hosts workshops where I try to bring North American visitors together with young local schoalrs, I welcome learning about folks whereabouts in advance. Also people should not underestimate how exciting it can be for (– outside the UK — often fairly isolated) philosophers to meet people working in the same area. So, I also suggest including AOS's.

  6. I'm a fellow with Mic Detlefsen's Ideals of Proof project and in residence in Paris for the 2009-2010 academic year; I'm affiliated with Paris 7 and Nancy 2. I work in logic and the history and philosophy of mathematics.

  7. I'm touring Australia and New Zealand for most of December, and I'll be flying around the UK and USA for Summer 2010 (mid-May to the beginning of August). The National University of Singapore has given me a grant to visit people's universities and present papers there. So if anyone would like me to come over to their department and give a talk, I'd be eager to oblige! [neiladri at gmail dot com]

  8. For what it's worth, I plan to be in the US for most, if not all, of December.

  9. Sara Rachel Chant

Zachary Ernst and I will be in Germany for much of August 2010 and we plan to be in England and France on either end of the Summer Institute with the National Humanities Center — which is planned for the last two weeks of August.

Zac specializes in game theory, formal epistemology, logic, automated reasoning and philosophy of biology.

I work in metaphysics and action theory — particularly, collective action.

  10. Visiting Auckland for three weeks in March 2010. Also Genoa for a week or so, probably in April 2010.

  11. Asbjørn Steglich-Petersen

I will be in NYC/Northeastern US in the second half of April 2010. I specialize in epistemology (esp. epistemic normativity, epistemic luck, the nature of belief) and metaphysics (esp. causation).

  12. I will be in the Tokyo area from January until August of 2010. AOS: History of modern, especially Spinoza, as well as certain topics in moral psychology and ancient. I'd also love to hear about any other English language friendly philosophical events occurring in Japan during that time.

  13. I'm in the Netherlands at TiLPS from 1st September – 30th November 2009.

  14. For what it's worth, I plan to be in Cambridge, MA for the spring of 2010.

On a more general note: I think it would be great to have a separate web page dedicated to this purpose! (I'm afraid I'm too technologically challenged to start one myself :)…).

  15. Clayton Littlejohn

For what it's worth, I plan on being in Iceland from May until August of 2010. I would love the opportunity to participate in any philosophical activity taking place in Iceland or areas I could easily reach from Iceland (Trips to Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, or Finland are foreseeable. Trips to Afghanistan and New Zealand are not.) I specialize in epistemology and ethical theory.

  16. The Council for International Exchange of Scholars has just announced the Fulbright faculty scholars for 2009-10, both U.S. scholars going abroad and non-U.S. scholars visiting in the U.S.: http://www.cies.org/vs_scholars/vs_dir.htm

Philosophers who will be in the U.S. are here:

  17. I will be at the University of Toronto (Centre for Ethics) from September 2009 until June 2010.
