Professor in the Department of Logic & Philosophy of Science at the University of California, Irvine, Professor Johnson was an expert in philosophy of linguistics, cognitive science, and psychology. Professors John Manchak and Kyle Stanford kindly shared with me this message they sent to colleagues and students at Irvine:
It is with saddened and heavy hearts that we notify you of the passing of Kent Johnson, Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science. Kent was hired at UCI in 2001 after earning his PhD in philosophy from Rutgers University. He was a leader in the Philosophy of Linguistics as well as in the Philosophy of Psychology and Cognitive Science, and he had enormous expertise in statistical methodology and causal modeling. He was a conscientious and dedicated teacher both in his LPS courses and those he generously taught for other departments in the School [of Social Sciences], and he served in a number of important service positions for both the School (e.g. Equity Advisor) and his own fields of expertise (e.g. serving on the Editorial Board of the journal Philosophy of Science). Most of all, he was a valued colleague, friend, and mentor to many faculty and students alike, and he will be sorely missed by his colleagues in LPS, in the School of Social Sciences, and across UCI.
A memorial service for Professor Johnson has been tentatively planned for Thursday, Oct. 19. It will be held on campus — more details to follow.
