Arizona’s Freedom Center to migrate from the Department of Philosophy to the new Department of Political Economy & Moral Sciences

The proposal is here, and this ad, which alerted me to this development, suggests it is going forward.   It looks like the PhD will continued to be offered through philosophy, which is wise, since there is not, at present, any natural market for "political economy & moral sciences."   Anyone with more information can add it in the comment section (including links).

  1. Hi Brian, Thanks for posting this. It is probably worth clarifying all of the following: The University of Arizona's Center for the Philosophy of Freedom was actually not previously a part of the Department of Philosophy. It was its own planning unit populated with faculty who were (and are) tenured in the Philosophy Department. As the new Department of Political Economy and Moral Sciences has emerged, the Center is currently going to move into the new department for official administrative purposes. But the faculty from Philosophy can remain, with tenure homes in Philosophy as they were before. The PhD program in Philosophy will not change at all. I've recently taken over as Director of the Center, at least for interim purposes, and David Schmidtz is now the acting Head of the new department. Since this is all new, naturally things are not completely settled, but the preceding are the most basic points as they bear on the Philosophy Department here at U of A.

  2. Thanks Michael, and Brian. Right. A new Dept of Political Economy and Moral Science (note, no plural on the word ‘science’) now exists. The Freedom Center was its own autonomous unit from the start and whether it migrates into a Dept from here is a separate question. The new Dept moved into what was the History dept space. The main office was next door to Philosophy’s. So we knocked down the wall between them, and after renovating, we now have a common reception area, kitchen, and mail room. Everyone seems pleased with the result. There won’t be a new PhD program. There would be no point. Some of the new Dept’s graduate funding will go into a new MA program, probably, but much of it will be used to shore up funding for graduate study in Philosophy. See http://moralscience.arizona.edu
