Philosopher Simon Kirchin, Director of the British Philosophy Association, shared the following:
This is to announce that the British Philosophical Association, along with other individuals and organisations, has been busy organizing the first ever British Philosophy Fortnight to take place this year. The aim is to celebrate all that is positive in the world of UK philosophy – education and learning, research and policy impact, ideas and arguments. We want to show how much philosophy changes lives and improves society.
We are organizing two launch events on Thursday 20th March – one in Parliament (morning) and one in Senate House, University of London (afternoon) – where we will have a line-up of guest speakers and specially invited guests. There will also be a student competition, some newly commissioned videos and school materials for everyone to view and use, and a range of events up and down the UK.
We are using two hashtags:
- #PhiloFortnight2025 - for the duration of the fortnight, but we aren't being strict about timings
- #PhilosophyMatters - which will be the permanent, all-year-round hashtag through which we can all gather and communicate news, events and everything else in philosophy
We have held briefings with a range of people since the Autumn. Here's how you can help:
- please use the hashtags above on social media – post and repost across your favoured platform
- if you are organizing anything around March or early April (and beyond!) please use the #PhilosophyMatters and #PhiloFortnight2025 labels
- visit the BPA website: https://bpa.ac.uk/activities/philosophymatters/ - in the next couple of weeks we will be posting various things (including logos to use for any events) and materials for schools
- tell us if you are organizing anything – again the BPA website has the contact details
- if you can, get people involved
- if you are at a university or school – students, alumni, other academics/teachers, senior leaders
- if you are outside formal education and research – any friends and colleagues
We hope that Philosophy Fortnight will become an annual event, as a platform for sharing all the good things that our community does. So even if you aren't organizing anything for this year, please think about doing so in March 2026.
As mentioned, we have held a range of briefing sessions for people in universities and schools (mainly), but I am aware that some people on this blog won't have heard about the campaign until now. If you want to find out any more, please feel free to email me: s.kirchin@leeds.ac.uk
