Early in the year, I started listening to some Santana, which I had not done in a number of years. Those first three Santana albums are gems, a fusion of blues rock and Latin musical styles. This song, which I apparently listened to more than any other, comes from Santana III in 1971:

IMHO, “Soul Sacrifice” at Woodstock is still one of the most electrifying rock performances ever recorded. Best experienced at FULL volume!
As I recall, Carlos once said that this track is the single thing he’s most proud of. There’s no doubt that McLaughlin is the stronger player (Santana himself would say as much), but Carlos more than holds his own here. Just listen to the nearly forty-second sustain he pulls off starting at 3:30!
