In addition to the separate posts announcing (generally tenured) faculty moves, I will keep a running list of all lateral moves (and retirements and deaths) not reflected in the faculty lists for the 2024 PGR (some moves that took place after the 2024 PGR were reflected in the faculty list, because the editors knew of them–the ones listed here were not reflected in the faculty lists evaluators saw).  I will start a new list for each academic year, so that the list does not get unwieldy (the 2024-25 listing is here, and the 2025-26 listing is here).   This year’s list reflects moves effective in 2027 (usually summer/fall 2027, when sooner or later, that is noted).  I will move this to the front periodically, putting recent additions in bold.  Untenured lateral moves will be noted as such, otherwise the move is with tenure.  A lateral move is one from one tenure-stream position to another either into or out of a program offering the PhD or terminal MA.  In addition I will list retirements and also deaths of non-emeritus faculty.  Please e-mail me with additions or corrections.

Sarah Buss (ethics, philosophy of action) will retire from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor at the end of the 2026-27 academic year.

Stephen Darwall (ethics, history of ethics) will retire from Yale University at the end of the 2026-27 academic year.

Hartry Field (philosophy of language and mind, philosophy of math, epistemology) will retire from New York University at the end of the 2026-27 academic year.

Michael N. Forster (18th & 19th-century German philosophy, Wittgenstein, philosophy of language, epistemolgy) will retire from the Chair in Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Bonn at the end of February 2027 (but will continue to be a part-time visiting professor at the University of Chicago).

Kareem Khalifa (philosophy of science) from the University of California, Los Angeles (Philosophy) to the University of Pittsburgh (HPS).

Cameron Kirk-Giannini (philosophy of language, philosophy of AI, social philosophy, philosophy of religion) from Rutgers University, Newark to the University of Southern California.

Peter Unger (epistemology, ethics) will retire from New York University at the end of the 2026-27 academic year.

Changes in the senior ranks (from this year and last) typically affect specialty rankings, although can also affect the “overall” rankings (e.g., Texas may drop out of the top 10, but will certainly remain in the top 15 [it depends a bit on what happens at peer programs]; Stanford will drop out of the top 15, but will remain in the top 20).
