Talk to philosopher bots

This is amusing. I haven’t tried it, so can’t vouch for how reliable it is, but I’ve opened comments for those who do sample it to report their impressions. I note that for some of the living philosophers–like Peter Singer and Torbjörn Tännsjö–the site indicates that these philosophers were consulted on their bot, so presumably they are more reliable.

  1. I chatted with the Ludwig Wittgenstein bot and was overall quite impressed. It confirmed a hypothesis I previously had that LLMs may be in a better position to interpret historical figures and works, in part because of their sheer ability to take all of the relevant evidence in at once. The LW-bot gave answers that coherently wove together a wide range of texts in the Philosophical Investigations.

Insofar as most students are interested in learning about the major figures of philosophy, I wonder whether these sorts of applications will make philosophy departments seem obsolete, to the general public, or to university administrators. Regardless, I anticipate radical changes to (higher) education very soon, at least if progress in AI continues at its current pace.
