Fascism comes to Poland

Poland, already under the control of right-wing Catholics (who, unlike dopey Steve Bannon, understand that government largesse is crucial to their success), has now compromised its court system.  That's serious:   when agents of the state, outside the executive and legislative branches, can command force against the other branches, human beings still have a chance.  Good wishes to my friends in Poland.  Please post relevant links and information!

    In analyzing this issue, it is important to remember that the left-right cleavages in the US do not exactly map onto the left-right cleavages in Poland. Although Poland might be under the control of right-wing Catholics specifically, it is not Catholics in general who have brought about recent (dangerous) developments. Polish Catholics overwhelmingly supported Solidarnosc.

    Poland is nearly 90% Catholic, so I don't see how the Orwellian "Law and Justice" party (the current authoritarians in control) could have won if "Polish Catholics overwhelmingly supported" the opposition.

    To clarify: it's true that during the last election, Polish Catholics supported PiS (Law and Justice), rather than any opposition party. But historically, Polish Catholics have not necessarily supported right-wing parties, as their support for Solidarnosc shows. So my point is that Catholicism isn't necessarily the main driver of right-wing politics in Poland, as it may be in the US. That is, Catholicism may not be the factor or the main factor that explains political tendencies in Poland (unless some phenomenon has occurred since Solidarnosc that has linked Catholicism with right-wing tendencies; whether that is the case or not is beyond me).
